Start: Lewes railway station
End: Newhaven Town railway station
You can take bikes on trains except during peak hours. Normally only a few are allowed on any one train.
At Newhaven the ride can be continued to Newhaven Fort and there is also the option to join National Cycle Network route 2 which can be taken to Seaford.
Further afield the ride links to the Avenue Verte ride to Paris via the Transmanche Ferry service to Dieppe.
The Egrets Way has its own website and there are some options as to which way you ride. Leaving Lewes railway station and passing Southdown Sports Club, the ride is mainly on farm tracks and along the banks of the river Ouse which can get muddy when wet.
Near Piddinghoe you may need to cycle on the C7 Lewes to Newhaven Road for a short distance. This is a busy narrow road so please be careful on this stretch.
Reaching Newhaven there is a marked cycle path, but to reach Newhaven Fort and the beach area you will be cycling on a narrow residential road.
Want a map of the route to take with you? All our routes are available in the free Komoot app.
To make sure you can use it throughout your cycle, download Komoot’s mp for the region to use offline before you go. Don’t forget to like our routes in the Komoot app and share photos or highlights from your own adventures!
There is a great description of this ride on The Egrets Way website.
Look our for new developments coming in the Newhaven area including The Sidings event space and a new restaurant in the beach area below Newhaven Fort.
It is also worth detour off the ride and up into the South Downs to visit Breaky Bottom vineyard. One of Sussex’s oldest vineyards in a unique setting.
